DVR's 2011 Community Shearing dates are set: Sat & Sun, April 16 & 17th, 2011
Some ranchers are surprised to hear that at DVR we shear most of our herd in late April, before GWAS!
We then hold one or more follow-up shearings later in the year for our show animals, and the girls too close to delivery.
There are two major health advantages to shearing early:
Protection from sunburn - Our alpacas, especially those with lighter skin, really need a good layer of fiber to protect them from the ever-present Colorado summer sun.
Reduced risk of disease - The extra few weeks of fiber growth makes it that much more difficult for invasive insects, such as flies and mosquitos, to reach the skin. Early shearing can reduce the chance of your higher-risk alpacas being infected by the West Nile virus!
Once again, our preferred shearer, New Zealand's Paul Smith & his Kiwi Connection crew will be working their magic in our climate controlled, indoor facility! Please let us know if you are interested in participating in our shear days, April 16th & 17th, 2011!
